In the Church there was a devotion, very prevalent, called the devotion to the Sacred Heart. The devotion to the Sacred Heart is not a veneration to a muscular organ that made blood circulation possible in the body of Jesus when he was living on the earth. What is the heart of Christ? It is Love itself. His two-faceted love for the Father - the Creator; and for his created children. That is the core - the center - the heart of Christ.
If we are not anchored in the core, we can stumble and falter along all sorts of distant paths.
If we are trained in such a self-discipline of looking for the core, then we will seek the heart of God.
We will look for what the heart of the church is. We will seek what the heart of the gospel is. We will seek out what the core mystery of History, Creation, and the Law is. If we haven't determined what the core is, the carnal in us will assume where the core should be. And that would be a bad situation.
