Three days before, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Decastedy for Evangelization, gave a message in Penang, Malaysia, inaugurating a Pilgrimage of Hope. His message drew on from the Gospel pericope where following a star the wise men (Magi) from the east arrive at Jerusalem and enquire about the new born king, and upon hearing that King Herod was disturbed and sought to kill the child.

"We need more Magi, pilgrims who seek, listen, learn, and adore. We need fewer Herods, those trapped in fear, power, and despair. Come and join jesus's pilgrimage," he said. His words were addressed to those in the leadership of the Church. Cardinal Tagle’s name was widely rumored as a possible candidate to be elected the Pope. In any case, I found his reflection on the Gospel passage, very interesting. I also felt that he was making a very accurate observation. Many people today are in one of three traps. The first trap is of fear. The second is of power. The third is of despair or hopelessness. Herod was caught up in all three!

On the other hand, the wise men/Magi were seeking, were listening, were open to learning, and strongly intended to worship the newborn King. At the instruction of the angel they were also ready to travel back via another way. If at all those who have ears might hear the Cardinal’s words to those in leadership!
