Galilee was mostly Jesus’s area of ministry. The Sea of Galilee was a lake with an area of only 166 square kilometers (64.5 square miles). In the Gospels, we see the Sea of Galilee becoming agitated by wind storm, and the disciples waking Jesus up who was sleeping on a pillow in the stern of the boat. Jesus wakes up and rebuking the wind and the sea, and they immediately calm down. Another account is of the disciples traveling to the other side of the lake alone in the boat, and again the lake turbulent by a storm, and Jesus walking on the turbulent lake to reach the disciples. Meanwhile, Peter becomes adventurous: he wants to walk on the turbulent lake. Jesus leads Peter. He fails halfway. The lake pulls him down. Jesus pulls him up.

What is the scene where the Lake of Galilee enters the gospel picture as a third character between Jesus and Peter? Despite having toiled all night in the Lake of Galilee, he was about to go home empty-handed and with an empty-heart. Jesus enters the picture, and takes Peter to the coffers of the Lake and gives a fill of the boat with an extraordinary catch. At another fill, not only filling Peter's boat but also that of his friends' with another extraordinary catch of fish. It's here that the Lake of Galilee retreats from the picture.

The Lake of Galilee is Peter's first arena. He never got mastered there. Without succeeding there, Peter cannot move on to the art of catching people. Even if he moves, he may not have self confidence. Therefore, Jesus stands by Peter. Just as one tames an elephant or a horse, Jesus helps Peter tame the Lake of Galilee. Now he is ready to go. Yes, to steer the big boat!
