In fact Paul's usage of Christ's body as the Church was not a metaphor, but his Christological awareness. It comes in 12: 12 onwards of the first epistle to the Corinthians. The Church was in a state of division. At that moment, the church was divided in the name of spiritual gifts. It is in such a state that Paul puts forward the idea of Church as the body of Christ, in which everyone is a member, and no one is outside. That is indeed appropriate and very correct.
However, it must be admitted that Paul is only referring to those who have been baptized and have become members of the "body" of Christ. However, the Church must be only a microcosm. The Church is not for itself. The Church is for the world. It is to be light to the world, salt to the earth, leaven to the world. Seen that way, the macrocosm is more important than the microcosm!
You may claim that you are the eyes of the world. That's okay. But then, strive to be so and keep smearing eyesalve, regularly. Because, Christ warns: “If the light within you is darkness, how great will that darkness be!” (Matt. 6:23)!
