I have heard about a so-called Christian sect who believe and teach that only a very limited number of people will be saved. They believe that only 144,000 persons will be saved!
At least some of the Jewish people of Jesus’ time thought so. Someone who believed so must have approached Jesus and asked the same question. “Will only a few be saved?”
Jesus’ first response is, “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” Some will be rejected.
Those rejected will be those who have seen him, heard him, and eaten what he had shared, still did not practice love in their lives in accordance with the light they had received. Almost always he tells the Jewish people that it is no use to be bragging about that you are a chosen people. Faith and rituals that are not in concorrance to their lives are fruitless, and that you are likely to be rejected.
(Probably it was for the same reason, that they got rid of him!)
At the same time, he adds that many people will come from the four corners of the earth and feast in the kingdom of heaven.
He had said: 'I am the way', and 'I am the door', and that discipleship consists in taking up of the cross.
Like life—like love—the call (invitation) that is given must also be universal!
Shouldn't we conclude that at least some sort of effort to enter into selfless-love is universally expected?
