We all go through an intellectual crisis in our adolescence which we call the teenage crisis. It is then that we begin to stand on our own two feet. Thus far we have been standing and walking using the legs that our parents had provided us with. But they are not our own. Therefore, they are just alien limbs for us. Parents shouldn't expect their children to be walking on the legs they had lent them, for the rest of their lives. They need their own legs and feet. We are talking about moral and spiritual convictions in life. Even there, we will not be able to go too far on our own. We may not have realized this in our adolescence. But if we ever looked back, we certainly might have realized it. Ultimately, it is God who leads us and gives us not only legs and feet but also our wings.
John the Baptist was a mentally and spiritually a strong person. He had received the Spirit's anointing even from his mother's womb. His parents had given him beautiful and strong "legs and feet". The Essene Religious community he belonged to and the library that was available to him there further strengthened the above-mentioned legs. However, they all had limitations. His knowing would only be complete if he had his own experience. He was not capable of that on his own. It had to be given this from on high. Perhaps it was because of this intention that Jesus came to his cousin John to be baptized by him. During the baptism, John saw the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus like a dove. He also heard the voice of the Father. That was the moment he received new "legs". John can be seen confessing this later: “I did not know him.”
Is this light from on high available to everyone? We think not. However, it is said that one must seek, knock, and ask. There may be variations in the gifting. But everyone who seeks, finds!
