Many religious traditions have stories/imagery of trampling over death. In the Hindu tradition, there is the concept of Lord Krishna dancing over Kaliya, the huge venomous serpent. There are many such imageries in the Bible too.
In the Jewish cultural context, the ocean / the deep/ the floods/ the torrents are all considered images of the 'dark and negative power'. They can also be symbols of worldly life and the universe itself.
The very second verse of the Bible goes like this: "Darkness was over the face of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters".
Job has these words to say: "He treads on the waves of the sea" (9:8)
The psalmist sings: "Your way was through the sea, your path through the mighty waters; and no one saw your footprints" (77:20).
One who was not afraid of the rising waves, one who slept peacefully on the stern even when the waves were tossing the boat, one who gently took hold of the fish the sea had kept hidden, one who said to the wind and the waves, "Be still, be calm," one who walked on the waves, one who pulled out the man who had sunk into the deep! "Who is this?" is the pertinent question they kept asking!
